Helpful Tips to Help You Find the Right Bed Size for Your Bedroom

Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out the right size of bed for a bedroom. You definitely don’t want to have to squeeze around your new bed or have it overwhelming the room. At the same time, a bed that is too small in a larger bedroom can make the entire room seem off. Here are a few tips to help you determine the size of bed you should consider that would work best in the room.

Dig up Some Graph Paper

Graph paper is going to be your best friend when it comes to working out the measurements. First, measure the dimensions of the room and then scale them to the graph paper. Next, draw in any windows, doors and closet spaces in the room while making sure that they are to scale as well. Once you do that, it’s time to add the furniture without the bed. If you’re using a pencil, you’ll be able to easily move the furniture around the graph paper until you find the best setting.

At this point, it’s important to note that any drawers or doors that open on furniture and closets should also be added. Measure how far the drawers pull out and use dashes to show this space. Leaving enough clearance for furniture is one thing but you won’t want your drawers to butt up against the bed once they are open or even come too close to the bed. You’ll want enough walking space around your new bed whether the drawers or doors are open or not.

When you’re done this exercise you’ll know the bed size that will fit perfectly in the room. As a general rule, the bed should occupy approximately 1/3 of the space in the room but this is not written in stone. It will all depend on the size and layout of the bedroom and the other furniture that you want to add to it.

When it’s time to start shopping for a new bed, be certain that you get the complete measurements. For example, if you’re looking at a bed with a velvet railing along the sides, make sure that you factor in the extra space these railings will take up.
